@roryshappycritters Awesome cartwheel from a whale that’s been a bit of a local! MMY0079 or “Scratchy” has been hanging out just outside of the Victoria Harbour for about a week now, feeding on the small fish we have around the area.
Scratchy’s name is well deserved. Their tail flukes have long rake marks at each end. These likely came from an attack by killer whales at some point during Scratchy’s childhood. Mammal-hunting Orca could team up and take down a young humpback, but after a few years they grow too large for a worthwhile attack. Humpbacks’ are not one to flee an attack, using their massive fins as swinging weapons. Sometimes, it can look more like the humpback is chasing the orcas!
